Excerpts From The Forum
A Recurring
Theme - Thoughtful Journalism Cole Campbell writes, "Public journalism has been about grappling with complex relationships and rethinking fundamental foundations of craft. For lots of reasons, including dealing with daily deadlines , many journalists have not yet come to terms with what public journalism addresses. It's easier to diss it or dismiss it. "An important objective of the society we're discussing is to create a place where the difficult work of thinking through relationships and foundations and competencies can be done. I think promoting the ideas of public journalism to ever-larger numbers of journalists is a secondary concern. "Journalists tend to learn by example: If they see something working somewhere else, they will emulate it. I think the top priority of this society should be to create a place where journalists wrestling with our relationships to citizens and democracy can keep inventing practices and advancing ideas that can be tested by whoever is willing to try them out. The ones that work well eventually will be picked up by others. That's when we can help others understand the thinking behind the new practices they're trying to master. "The main service needed is a "place" to share ideas
and experiences, to brainstorm and build on one another's thinking,
to reflect on experiments, etc., and move forward to richer thinking
and more powerful practices."
